Popular Oil Painting Subjects

Horse Paintings — Power, Movement & Vastu Prosperity

Among all oil painting subjects, horse paintings hold a special place in Indian homes and offices. The horse symbolises speed, strength, and unbridled energy — and in Vastu Shastra, a painting of seven galloping horses is considered one of the most powerful tools for attracting success and financial growth. Our Udaipur artists render each horse with extraordinary attention to muscle, motion, and mane — capturing the raw power of the animal in every brushstroke.

Whether you prefer the classic seven horses racing at sunrise, a dramatic moonlit scene of white stallions, or a single majestic black horse, our collection offers every interpretation in large, statement sizes. Each painting uses artist-grade oil colours on heavy-duty cotton canvas, ensuring the deep, luminous tones that only oil paint can achieve. As per Vastu belief, daytime and sunset 7 horse paintings suit the south wall, and the moonlight version suits the north or east wall.

Wildlife & Animal Paintings — Fierce Beauty for Modern Walls

Wildlife oil paintings have surged in popularity as Indian homeowners move beyond traditional religious art towards bold, nature-inspired statement pieces. A large tiger oil painting on canvas commands attention in any room — its amber and black tones creating dramatic contrast against neutral walls. Our wildlife collection features Bengal tigers, lion and lioness pairs, and mixed-animal jungle scenes, all painted by artists trained in classical realism.

Each wildlife piece is painted from reference studies rather than photographs, meaning your painting carries the interpretation and life that only a human hand can give. These paintings work well in study rooms, home offices and corporate offices where you want to project strength, focus and authority. The rich depth of oil paint makes fur textures, water reflections, and jungle foliage look almost three-dimensional.

Village Scene Paintings — The Soul of Rural India

Village life oil paintings are among our most emotionally resonant artworks — pieces that connect urban Indian families to their roots, and international buyers to the timeless beauty of rural India. These paintings depict life as it has unfolded for centuries: women carrying water pots at dawn, farmers guiding bullock carts through golden fields, children playing in dusty lanes, and the warm amber light of evening settling over thatched rooftops.

Our artists from Udaipur have a deep personal connection to the village landscapes of Rajasthan, and this authenticity shows in every composition. Village scene paintings work beautifully in living rooms, dining areas, and bedrooms where you want warmth, nostalgia, and a sense of grounded calm. Sizes range from intimate 23 x 22 inch pieces to sweeping panoramas of 55 x 32 inches for large feature walls.

Portrait Paintings — Human Stories in Oil

Portrait oil painting is one of the oldest and most personal art forms in the world — and our Udaipur artists have mastered it across centuries of cultural tradition. Our portrait collection includes traditional Indian women in colourful Rajasthani attire, Rajput kings in regal turbans and jewels, dignified elders with weathered faces full of story, and graceful figures with swans and birds in classical compositions.

These paintings bring warmth, character, and narrative depth to any room. A portrait painting draws the eye, creates a conversation, and gives your space a gallery-quality feel that no print can replicate. We also offer custom portrait commissions — providing a photograph of your subject and our artists will create a unique oil portrait that becomes a family heirloom.

Oil Painting Size Guide for Indian Homes

Choosing the right size painting is one of the most common questions our buyers ask. A painting that is too small on a large wall looks lost; one that is too large overwhelms the space. Use this guide to find your ideal size before you order.

Pro Tip: Use painter's tape to mark the painting dimensions on your wall before ordering — it takes 2 minutes and eliminates guesswork. For large feature walls, consider a pair of medium paintings (36 x 24 inches each) hung side by side rather than one very large piece.

Why Original Oil Paintings Are Worth Every Rupee — vs Printed Canvas Art

Walk into any home decor store or scroll through Amazon and you will find hundreds of "oil paintings" priced between Rs 500 and Rs 3,000. Almost all of these are digital prints on canvas — a photograph of a painting printed on fabric and stretched over a wooden frame. They look like art from a distance, but up close the difference is immediate and stark.

An original handmade oil painting breathes. The paint sits on the canvas in physical layers — thick impasto strokes that catch light differently as you move around the room, thin transparent glazes that create luminous depth, and textured surfaces your eye reads as real, living material. No printer can replicate this. When you own an original, you own something that was made by a human hand, took days or weeks to complete, and will never be exactly duplicated.

Beyond how it looks, a hand-painted oil painting is a one-of-a-kind piece. Well-kept oil paintings on quality canvas can last for generations. A printed canvas is a reproduction: it has no brushwork and is not unique.

Every Rupasya painting comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing your piece is 100% original and handmade. When you buy from us, you are not buying decor — you are acquiring a piece of living Indian heritage.

Vastu Guide: Which Painting to Place Where in Your Home

Vastu Shastra, India's ancient science of space and energy, has clear guidance on which art to place in which direction — and which subjects invite positive energy into your home. At Rupasya, our Udaipur artists are deeply familiar with these traditions, and our collection is curated with Vastu principles in mind.

• North Wall: Governed by Kuber (deity of wealth) — ideal for paintings with water elements, green landscapes, or images of abundance. Village scenes with rivers or lush fields work beautifully here.
• South Wall: Governed by Yama and associated with fame and recognition — ideal for horse paintings, particularly the 7 running horses in warm sunrise or golden tones. This is the most powerful placement for career growth.
• East Wall: Associated with the Sun and new beginnings — ideal for sunrise paintings, nature scenes, and bright, warm-toned landscapes. Avoid dark or heavy subjects on the east wall.
• West Wall: Associated with creativity and children — ideal for playful, colourful paintings. Village life scenes with children or women in festive attire work well here.
• Living Room: The heart of Vastu energy exchange with guests. Choose uplifting, positive subjects — galloping horses, thriving village scenes, and images of abundance. Avoid images of sadness, isolation, or fierce wildlife in common areas.
• Bedroom: Choose calming, romantic, or nature-inspired subjects. Portraits of couples, women with flowers or birds, and gentle landscapes promote harmony and rest.

How to Care for Your Oil Painting

To ensure your oil painting remains vibrant for generations, proper care is essential. Avoid placing the artwork in direct sunlight as UV rays can cause colors to fade over time. Maintaining a stable temperature and humidity level is crucial; extreme fluctuations can cause the canvas to expand or contract, potentially leading to cracks.

For cleaning, never use water or chemical sprays. A soft, dry natural hair brush can be used to gently dust the surface. If the painting is heavily soiled, consult a professional conservator. Oil paintings are incredibly durable and can last for centuries if handled correctly. The oil medium itself acts as a protective layer, but a final varnish applied after the paint has fully cured (usually after 6-12 months) adds an extra shield against dust and environmental pollutants.

The Artists Behind Every Rupasya Painting

Every oil painting in our collection is made by hand in Udaipur, Rajasthan — a city with a 500-year heritage of court painting, miniature art, and decorative tradition. Our artists are not hobbyists. They are trained professionals who have studied under master painters, many of whom carry techniques passed down through multiple generations of artisan families.

Our artists work exclusively with artist-grade oil colours — not student-grade or craft-store paints. They paint on heavy-duty cotton canvas pre-treated with professional gesso, using hog-hair and synthetic brushes matched to the technique each subject demands. A single large-format painting takes between 7 and 21 days to complete, depending on complexity.

When you purchase from Rupasya, your painting is finished to order — meaning the artist adds final details, touch-ups, and their signature to your specific piece before it is packed and shipped. You will receive a Certificate of Authenticity bearing the artist's name, the painting title, dimensions, and date of completion.

We are proud to support traditional Udaipur artisans and keep this living heritage accessible to homes and collectors across India and the world.
