The Story Behind the Masterpiece
This Mughal Hunting Scene Painting captures a royal shikar (hunt) expedition — a camel rider leading a trained hunting cheetah on a leash, accompanied by a companion on foot and a riderless horse racing alongside, set against a coastal desert landscape. Trained hunting cheetahs were a celebrated symbol of Mughal royal pursuits, with Emperor Akbar himself known to have kept over a thousand in his imperial menagerie. Bordered by Persian calligraphy and a traditional floral cartouche pattern, the piece is hand-painted on antique old paper using natural stone pigments.
