The Story Behind the Masterpiece
Handmade Maha Raas Leela Pichwai Painting for Sharad Purnima
This grand narrative Pichwai captures the Maha Raas, the divine dance of Krishna and the gopis on the full-moon night of Sharad Purnima. In the centre, Shrinathji stands inside a golden shrine on a white, star-dotted floor, while blue-complexioned Krishna figures with halos alternate with gopis in a wide circle — a traditional Rasamandala in which Krishna appears beside every gopi.
Peacocks, two cows and musicians with instruments join the circle. Around it rise banana groves and trees, and above them a night sky of white dots holds a bright full moon with eight vimaans carrying gods and divine beings who have come to watch.
Panels, Borders and Natural Colours
Rows of small leela panels and swaroop panels surround the main scene, showing temples, forests and Shrinathji in different darshans, all inside a maroon border filled with white cows. Every panel is hand-painted in natural colours on cotton cloth with fine brushwork, making the piece a rich study for close viewing.
A Painting for Festival Seasons and Collectors
At 6 x 4 ft, the landscape format suits living rooms, drawing rooms and cultural interiors. It is especially meaningful for homes that celebrate Sharad Purnima and the Raas Leela tradition.
